In the internet you can find many tablets for less than 100 €, many of them are not from brand manufacturers but from unknown, often Chinese manufacturers. A large selection can be found at Wish.com, but in our test all devices of this platform failed so far. Amazon has been offering tablets for several years now, the first ones were introduced under the name „Kindle Fire HD“ in 2012. In the meantime, the Kindle has been dropped, what remains are several different devices that stand out from the crowd, especially due to their low price and their huge publisher. We took a look at the latest model from 2020 from the Fire HD series, the Fire HD 8 / 8 Plus 10th generation.
The hardware
The versions
Before we deal with the inner, as well as the outer values, let us first look at the different versions and prices. Amazon offers all tablets basically in two versions, with and without special offers. These special offers are nothing else than advertisements, which you can see on your device in the lock screen. If you don’t want this advertising, the device costs on average 20 € more. Fortunately, you can also buy your Fire HD later.
Otherwise, the Fire HD 8 in the 10th generation is sold in four versions, one with 32 GB and one with 64 GB memory, then as Fire HD 8 with 2 GB RAM and as Fire HD 8 Plus with 3 GB RAM and the possibility to charge the tablet wirelessly.
Maximum, thus as Fire HD 8 Plus with 64 GB memory, the device costs about 160 €, minimum, as Fire HD 8 with 32 GB, the tablet costs 99 €.
Apart from the mentioned values, the devices do not differ from each other, not even from the outside.
The price is thus a real attack on other top dogs in this device category, you get about three Fire HD 8 for the price of an entry-level iPad. Moreover, there are hardly any products worth mentioning in this price segment, but the low price has its price, too 😉 more on that later.
A small interjection to the topic: Which version is the right one for me?
We give the clear recommendation to buy the 32 GB version if possible, with each version the memory can be extended with a microSD card. These cost only 10-20 € today, with which you can already expand the memory with up to 128 GB. If you plan to download many movies and series, you would have to switch to an SD card anyway.
Whether or not the Plus version is used depends more on the intended purpose: If you plan to use the device as an echo show, with the corresponding docking station, the Plus version has an advantage. A normal user does not notice the RAM difference so much in everyday life.
The housing
One point that you should never forget with the Fire HD 8 is, as already mentioned, the price range in which this tablet is located. And that’s just what you notice with the case: The device is completely made of plastic. The material is very solid, cleanly processed, but doesn’t feel high-quality. If you tap your fingers on it, it always sounds a bit hollow and not solid. But to compare the device with an iPad is unfair, as it is at least three times more expensive.
The display is exactly 8 inches (20.32 cm) in size, the screen feels good. However, due to a missing grease-repellent layer, it looks very horrible very quickly.
The default view of the Fire HD 8 is in landscape format, accordingly the speakers are located on the long edge. That’s right, plural, because the Fire HD 8 has stereo speakers that are amazingly good. On the right short side are the volume rocker and the standby switch. Both unfortunately don’t feel very high quality.
In terms of connections, the Fire HD 8 of the 10th generation has USB-C, making it the second device from Amazon with this connection, but the connection can only transfer data using USB 2.0. There is also a jack and a slot for a microSD card.
Then there are the cameras, it is twice the same, 2 MP camera, which is suitable for HD video. The quality is horrible, no joke, the exposure is not good, the resolution logically also not. It just looks like a good old 2 MP camera. For video telephony it can be enough. The cameras are simply not meant for anything else.
The case is available in slate grey, black, white and dark blue.
The inner values of the Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus
The technical data of the Amazon Fire HD 8 and Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus do not read like the data of a spaceship, but that does not have to be the case. The CPU is a 4x ARM Cortex-A53 with 2.0 GHz per core. Depending on the system, there is then 2 or 3 GB RAM, Amazon also states up to 12 hours battery life. The battery is 4850 mAh, the realistic runtime might not quite reach the 12 hours, but the runtime is impressive. The standby time is also surprisingly good, which is both now absolutely not typical for this price range.
.The display is, as already mentioned, 20.3 cm (8 inches) in size and has a resolution of 1280 x 800 at 189 ppi. The display is not outstanding, but brightness and colours are just right, and the viewing angle also remains stable for a long time. This is also often not the case with simple displays.
The memory is 32 or 64 GB and can be expanded by up to 1 TB with a microSD.
On Amazon devices Fire OS is used, it is based on Android – but among other things the Google Play services are missing. The Fire HD 8 is shipped with version 7.3.1.3, which is based on Android 9.
Fire OS
As already mentioned, Fire OS is used on the Amazon devices. Amazon has not really changed the control and operation, but the home screen takes some getting used to. The whole system is divided into tabs, the home screen shows apps, but not necessarily all of them. Swipe to the left to get to a „for you“ view. Here, apps are suggested that show e.g. the temperature, and suggestions from other sources, such as series, movies, books, etc. which you can read/view further.
The other tabs are divided into media, such as books, video, games and apps, but also shopping (i.e. shopping at Amazon), music (primarily Amazon Music) and Audible – Amazon’s audio book subscription. Here you can see the Amazon influence very clearly, but partly this will also be the reason why Amazon can offer this device so cheaply.
For example, there is no Google Play Store, Amazon is limited to their own App Store. This has a certain selection, but compared to the Play Store the choice is overwhelming. Fortunately there are ways and means to use the Google services anyway.
The Fire HD 8 can do this well
The Amazon Fire HD 8 and the Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus are perfect for watching movies and series. The stereo speakers offer an amazingly good sound image. As streaming services, Amazon Prime Video is of course used, but also Netflix. YouTube also works via a web version that takes some getting used to, as the actual app wouldn’t run due to the missing play services.
Even simple games run well on the Fire HD 8, but complex applications simply lack performance at some point. The tablet is also suitable as a control center for your own SmartHome, provided you can get the apps from somewhere. APKs can be installed without problems.
The Fire HD 8 can’t do that so well
You will unfortunately notice again and again that the Fire HD 8 unfortunately doesn’t have much computing power. Opening apps takes a long time, there are small jerks in the system and surfing the web can be really slow. Even complex applications or games are not so well stored on the device. Productive work doesn’t go so well either, so it’s better to grab an iPad here.
The Better Echo Show?
Instead of Siri or Google Assistant, Alexa is used on an Amazon device of course. Alexa can be reached at any time in the system, by saying „Alexa“ or by holding down the home button. There is also a „show mode“, in which the Fire HD shows the same as the Echo Show devices from Amazon. The Plus version can automatically switch to this mode when placed on the separately available docking station.
This is a pretty cool feature, it pairs the otherwise not so feature-rich functions of the Echo Shows with a tablet. Our Echo Show 5 review can be found here.
In addition, there is of course the Alexa app on the Fire HD, which is quite good, because otherwise you always have to have your smartphone at hand when using Echo devices. For us Alexa is unfortunately still not mature enough. For example, we wanted to import our Hue lamps from Philips to try them out, but this was only possible with the Alexa iPhone app. On the Fire HD the app always turned black and stayed black. There are still many teething troubles.
The ecosystem
One thing we would like to highlight is the ecosystem that Amazon has created around the devices. There are fancy covers for the devices from Amazon itself, with which you can also set up the tablet, and also lots of accessories from companies certified by Amazon. Among them are display protection foils and the aforementioned docking station.
To simplify things, these are also offered with the tablet, which at first glance can be annoying as advertising, but can prevent others from buying the wrong or bad accessories.
Also Amazon offers that you can register the tablet directly on yourself. This should make the setup even easier. We have chosen this, nevertheless we had to register again, but basically this should be possible.
And in summary?
With the Amazon Fire HD 8 or Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus you get a good and at the same time incredibly cheap tablet. It is primarily intended for entertainment, not as a tablet for working – but that makes it very good. The battery lasts a long time, the display is completely adequate and the Fire HD 8 10 is too heavy. Neither is Gen. You have to live with the fact that the entire device is very Amazon-heavy. The in-house apps run best, the rest works quickly. Nevertheless, if you’re looking for a tablet that you can use for watching a series and take with you on the road, you’ll get an extremely good and affordable device that doesn’t actually do anything wrong.
